Adjusting to New Dentures
It does not matter what type of dentures you receive, a period of discomfort while adjusting to them is expected. During the first few weeks of your new dentures, you may experience trouble eating and talking, gum irritation and soreness. Try not to let this discourage you. It is normal and only temporary! If you have any questions about adjusting to dentures in Phoenix, Arizona, please give us a call at Sundance Dental Care at 623-936-6665 and schedule a consultation with our dentists, Dr. Rebecca Schaffer and Dr. Mai-Ly Duong.
How long will it take to get used to dentures?
We have found that it typically takes people four to six weeks to fully adjust to their new dentures. Depending on the complexity of the case, it can be more or less than that timeline. At the beginning, you will experience some of the symptoms listed above, but by the end, your dentures should feel natural and comfortable in your mouth.
Tips while adjusting to new dentures
While it is true that there is no way to completely avoid discomfort after receiving new dentures, there are certain things you can do to make it easier on yourself!
Steer clear of hard foods and sticky foods. Certain foods can get stuck in your dentures and dislodge them.
Cut your food into small pieces. This will help ease into eating with your new dentures.
Talk slowly. Pronunciation will be difficult at first!
Schedule follow-up appointments. Attend these appointments with our dentists to ensure everything is in the right place and progressing properly!
Changes to your oral hygiene routine
After receiving dentures, your oral hygiene routine is bound to change a little bit. It is still necessary to take care of your gums and clean your dentures regularly. As always, our dentists will check to make sure your dentures are in place, working properly and as clean as they should be. This will help you achieve a healthy mouth and bright smile!
